Lady Dukes get ready to tear up the track

The Lady Dukes lace up their running shoes and get ready to work as track season kicks off this past Tuesday.

The talented runners, jumpers, and throwers have come out to the track and started conditioning for the upcoming competitions under the guidance of Coach Kilrea, new head coach. Along with the help of assistant coaches, Tucker, Johnson, Metcalf, and Petranek, the Lady Dukes plan to have a successful season.

Coach Kilrea has come from coaching track and cross country at Lyons Township to take over retired Coach Annette Schulte’s role. As a 6th grade English teacher at Churchville during the day, Kilrea is ready to be a key part of York’s team in the afternoon.

“Track and Field is such a fun sport to be a part of because there is so much going on,” said Kilrea, “I hope that as a team, we can be supportive of each other, while all working toward our common goal of becoming a stronger
program.”

Being a high school track athlete herself, she understands the importance of having a strong and dedicated coaching system.

“I am excited about taking over as head coach,” said Kilrea. “It is definitely a challenge, but one that is a lot of fun and allows me to work with some great coaches and athletes.”

Although it is Coach Kilrea’s first season, for some it is the end of an era.

“This year being my last season is pretty bittersweet,” said Megan McGreal, senior. “It’s sad that it’s ending because I’ve had a lot of memories, but this season I really hope to have a personal record in the mile.”

Returning underclassmen also get enthusiastic for the season, and are reminded of their love for the events within the fieldhouse.

“I feel most track events go by so fast and you have no time to think about the race,” said Anna Morley, sophomore. “I love running the 3200 because it is so long, so you can be more strategic.”

With the first meet arriving Feb. 10, coaches encourage all York students to come out to see the exciting competition of races, jumps, and throws.

“The atmosphere of a track and field meet is so intense, fun, and spirited that you cannot help but being invested as a fan,” said Kilrea.
