Yorks music department prepares for its final concerts

With the 2015-2016 year wrapping up, York’s symphonic band, orchestra, and concert choir are preparing for their last concert of the year. Each performance will show how much each group has improved since the beginning of the year.

The first of the final concerts is the band’s performance on Thursday, April 28. The concert will feature many songs, but two of the favorites among the band are Vanity Fair and Yosemite Autumn.

“Yosemite Autumn is a really cool piece,” said Lena Stojiljkovic, senior. “It’s written in a way that allows you to visualize Yosemite through the music. Vanity Fair was incredibly hard to learn and is still a challenge to perform, but in the end, it’s one of those pieces that gives you a musical fulfilment which reminds you of the reasons you continue to play music.”

Next, the choirs will be featured on Thursday, May 5. While some songs will be featuring performances by orchestral quartets and duos, a highlight of the concert will be a choral cover of Space Oddity by David Bowie.

“The reason we chose to perform Space Oddity is pretty self explanatory,” said Tatum Langley, junior. “It’s a nice tribute to Bowie and is a very different and interesting piece to do on a choir concert.”

Finally, the orchestras will cap off a great year with their final performance on Thursday, May 12. The concert will feature a solo performance by Andrew French, junior, on Beethoven’s first piano concerto and many other excitingly challenging pieces.

“I am both excited and terrified as the concert day approaches. I am confident that both the orchestra and I will put on a stellar performance!” said Andrew French, junior.
