On Sept. 29, YSET held its D205 Allstar game as a fundraiser for families in need of financial assistance.

The highly competitive game was between District 205 teachers and, “The World Famous”, Harlem Wizards. The proceeds from this event help financially support community members with academic expenses and extracurricular activities.

“Our main mission is to fund educational programs for all the schools in District 205 and Elmhurst”, said the YSET organization.

YSET and the Harlem Wizards worked towards a common goal and made the perfect pair for friendly competition. The teachers who went head to head with the Wizards planned out their strategies for success.

“My goal for the game is to stay alive,” said Mrs. Scully. “When they come after me, I’m going to run under their legs.”

The Harlem Wizards have been playing against teachers since 1962. The team is currently made up of players that go by the following names: Roadrunner, Sarge, Big J, Sky-Walker, Swoop, and High-Rise. Last year alone, the team raised $3 million for various organizations.

“The money that is raised here goes back to your community and your kids,” said the team, “That’s always important.”

In addition the good cause that the proceeds go towards, the chance to see former and current teachers doing their best to win also brings in a lot of spectators–from York as well other D205 schools. This year’s coach was Ms. Ely, girl’s basketball coach here at York. She was also very enthusiastic to be apart of the team.

I signed up to coach because I thought it would be a great way to get involved and have fun with the York students and staff,” said Ms. Ely. “I remember growing up watching teams such as the Harlem Wizards play, and I always loved the level of energy and laughter they brought to basketball in school communities.”

Though District 205 lost against The Harlem Wizards with a score of 38-30, the organization raised over $15,000 to support fellow community members and had fun doing so.
