On the evening of Tuesday, Nov. 1, all of the new National Honors Society (NHS) members were officially inducted into the organization. The ceremony was held in the commons, and included brief speeches from administrators and student executives in the York branch of NHS.

Parents and students arrived at 6:30 p.m., and the speeches began around 7 p.m. The speeches centered around the principles of NHS, which are scholarship, leadership, service, and character. All of the inductees’ names were then announced, and they walked across the stage to shake Principal DeLuga’s hand.

At the end of sophomore year, students who have a GPA of 3.5 or higher are invited to apply to the organisation. The real application process is normally in the beginning of junior year. For the application to be accepted, it has to show proof of at least 10 service hours, leadership in or out of school, and involvement in different school activities.

“It’s nice to know that all of the work you do is being appreciated during high school,” said junior and new NHS member Bridget Campbell. “A lot of what we do is for college and our professional lives, so it’s nice to be recognized now.”

Once in NHS, it’s possible to become an officer by senior year. The officers, including the President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, and Historian, all gave speeches at the ceremony, and are excited to welcome the new group of students into NHS.

“I think we have a good group of kids this year,” said Flanagan Waldherr, the secretary. “I don’t know them that well, but they seem like a nice group of kids.”
