Special Olympic Basketball has big plans for upcoming season

The Dukes on the Special Olympic Basketball Team have had a promising start so far.

Since the beginning of the season in November, the team has been 1-1 and is only planning on improving as the season progresses and players get a better feel for working together.

Though the team is focusing on doing well in competitions on the court, another important aspect is to make a deeper impact on players.

“Obviously one of our main goals every year is for our players to improve on their individual skills as well as learning to play basketball as a team,” said Mr. Westendorf, coach. “We also want our players to grow as people, so we are emphasizing the importance of sportsmanship, being responsible, and supporting our teammates.”

Along with the fortification of one another because of this strong bond, York students and families are also strongly encouraging.

“The players are always motivated by seeing the fans at our home games,” said Westendorf,  “We have had so much support from the other sports which gets everybody pumped to play.”

Despite being down six players after graduation, the motivation continues with new faces who have come to participate. A few players also stand out to coaches as they get a handle on the game and the importance of the values taught.

“Billy O’Brien has been having a great season,” said Westendorf, “This is his second year with Special Olympics, and,  Alex Hamilton is our only senior this year, so this is an exciting season for him too.”

The team’s season will continue, and hopefully advance to the State tournament in Bloomington-Normal in March, if they have success at the District Tournament in January.

The Special Olympics Basketball team will have their next game this Friday, Dec. 16.

Come out and support your Dukes!
