Girls track and field has promising first meet

Julie Biggins, Jeanette Morley, Megan McGreal, Jackie Biggins, and Sarah May gather together to cheer on their competing team members during downtime.

Girls track had a successful first meet last Friday, Feb. 10 in the fieldhouse.

The first invite of the season was hosted by York with competitors from schools all over the area, including Hersey, Hoffman Estates, Hinsdale South, Willowbrook, and Addison Trail.

The training and hard work paid off for the athletes with the freshman-sophomore team finishing first and varsity finishing third.

“We were all very excited to start our competitive season and the girls were pumped to put their uniforms on for the first time,” said head coach Coach Kilrea. “It is great to be able to get a baseline for the season and have some results to set some goals off of.”

The adrenaline of the first competition of the season helped propel the runners, jumpers, and throwers forward.

Olivia Chavez and Kim Severino pleased with the results of their first competition of the season.

“I had a little bit of nerves today,” said Kim Severino, junior. “But right before I was jumping it was fine and all the nervousness went away and I ended up jumping a PR.”

For some, this was their last first meet before moving on to a bigger and more intense field of competition. Seniors like Jeanette Morley use this season as the final preparation for a collegiate team.

“I’m so excited to jump in college,” said Morley, senior. “It puts a lot of pressure on this season, but I think do well under pressure.”

Many were proud of how the their first meet went,

but also enjoyed the valuable time spent with their team.

“My favorite part about the meets is all the energy,” said Olivia Chavez, junior. “Being able to watch everyone improve really makes being part of a team exciting.”

Overall, Friday’s competition was great start to the season for the girls on the team, and they look forward to running faster, as well as jumping and throwing farther as the season progresses.

“I think every girl learned something from her experience at the meet that she wants to use to get better and improve upon at our next invite,” said Kilrea.
