Spring weather breaks records in Chicago’s wave of warmth
With daily temperatures averaging around 10 degrees above normal for Chicago’s month of February, it’s safe to say the record books may need some updating.
The Windy City and surrounding areas have been getting a taste of spring this past week as temperatures push to record-breaking highs, and the sun comes out for the first time in what feels like ages.
Last Monday, the thermometers managed to reach 70 for the second time this month, which according to WGN, is not considered a normal high until the month of May. WGN also reports that since the month of February in 1871, there have not been two days reaching 70 degrees or more.
Of course with this weather comes the celebration of leaving coats at home, opening the windows, and getting outside without shivering in the bitter cold.
“I love skateboarding, and I’m so happy that I got a chance to get out and skate around,” said Mike Ryan, sophomore. “I’m excited for it to warm up so I can get out more.”
Others took it upon themselves to take advantage of the warm weather and explore the Elmhurst area.
“I spent four hours climbing trees and walking around Eldridge Park,” said Morgan Gorecki, senior. “It was one of my favorite days, and I got to take in all the beauty around the park.”
The upcoming spring also brings upon the start of York’s spring sports seasons.
“I’m excited for the softball season to start,” said Haley Fisher, freshman.“Being able to play outside in the nice weather is definitely something I’m looking forward to.”
As this month comes to an end on a continued spring-like note, we also make history as one of the most snow-less Februarys on record, with the number of rainy days at an all-time low and only two days of snowfall.
Although temperatures have once again dipped and the rest of the week seems to be a slight discouragement, spring is just around the corner Dukes!
