Rock your socks for a good cause
On Tuesday, Mar. 21, York will take part in “Rock Your Socks” in honor or World Down Syndrome Day.
According to the National Down Syndrome Society, most babies are born with 23 pairs of chromosomes, half of which are inherited from each parent, but approximately 1 out of ever 700 babies born in the U.S. have an extra copy of chromosome 21, the most common cause of Down Syndrome. The extra chromosome affects the development of the body and brain, causing mental and physical challenges.
At York, Mrs. DeLuga feels especially close to this cause, and she is happy to bring the cause to York. Mrs. DeLuga’s daughter Emma has Down Syndrome.
“Of course, my daughter Emma is the reason I started this tradition four years ago in District 214, but the students loved it,” said DeLuga.
This day hopes to bring awareness to all kids living with Down Syndrome everyday.
“The idea behind rocking mismatched socks is to celebrate individuality and to embrace acceptance of all,” said DeLuga. “It would be wonderful if staff would do this as well!”
Come one, come all, next week on Mar. 21 honor World Down Syndrome Day!
