Bracket Busted? You have these teams to thank!
Tonight the NCAA College Basketball Tournament, better known as March Madness, tips off its Sweet 16 round, where the final 16 teams in the tournament will compete to be one of the final four standing.
The tournament began on March 14, with 64 teams, then narrowed to 32 teams last weekend. In total, 48 games were played, with many surprising upsets. Whether you picked some of the upsets or your champion went down, it was a crazy weekend! With that said, let’s take a look at what teams made or broke your bracket this March.
Only one region of the bracket has the one, two, three and four seed going to the Sweet Sixteen. This comes with upsets, from Xavier and Michigan as well as Wisconsin. The real question is can and will these teams continue their Cinderella story and continuing busting brackets.
Let’s start with the East region. In this region the Sweet Sixteen consists of Eight seed Wisconsin vs Four seed Florida and Three seed Baylor vs Seven seed South Carolina. This region was the one that busted the most brackets this year, as 73 percent of the country had top seeded Villanova advancing to the Sweet Sixteen and Two seed Duke at 69 percent. Therefore, Wisconsin and South Carolina are two teams who made big noise this year.
Then in the Midwest region, the Sweet Sixteen includes the matchups of One seed Kansas vs Four seed Purdue and Three seed Oregon vs Seven seed Michigan. While this region was pretty predictable by many, Michigan made huge noise coming off a Big Ten championship and then upsetting Two seed Louisville in the Second Round. Michigan was another team that upset a lot of brackets all around the country.
Lastly, the South region did not have any major upsets, with the top four seeds advancing to the Sweet Sixteen. However, the East region did have one pretty big one with Eleven seed Xavier. Xavier came into the tournament hot and enters the Sweet Sixteen coming off two major upsets of Six seed Maryland and Three seed Florida State. Now all that’s left to do is watch and see if any of these teams can cap off a cinderella story run or if it all comes to an end in the following round. But first, let’s take a look at the individual teams that were big bracket busters this year.
First, we start with the eighth-seeded Wisconsin Badgers. Wisconsin came into the tournament as arguably the most underseeded team, meaning they deserved a higher seed than the one they were given. In the first round they matched up with Nine seed Virginia Tech. Like most Eight vs. Nine matchups, this was a very close game in which the teams were pretty evenly matched. However, Wisconsin was picked to win by 67.7 percent of America and proved they were a better team than most people thought when the won by a final score of 84-74. In the second round they had a much tougher matchup with the top seed in the entire tournament, the defending champion Villanova Wildcats. Coming in, 73.6 percent of the country had Villanova advancing on to the Sweet Sixteen, and 13 percent of the country had them winning the entire tournament! Well, Wisconsin kept up the same mentality as they had in the first round and kept up with Villanova for the entire game, and down the stretch they outplayed their top-seeded opponent and shocked the world with their 65-62 victory!
Next we look at a team in the same region, the seventh-seeded South Carolina Gamecocks. South Carolina came in as a team that no one thought much of or knew much about. As a matter of fact, 55 percent of America predicted them to be upset in the first round. However, South Carolina came out in the first round on fire and dominated a Ten seeded Marquette Golden Eagles team for the entire game, winning by a final score of 93-73. In the next round however, they were matched up with the Two seed Duke Blue Devils. Once again, not many people believed in the Gamecocks, whereas Duke was picked by 87 percent of people to win the game and advance. But, South Carolina carried over their fire and would not back down to the more talented Blue Devils team and fought to the end, coming out with a 88-81 victory.
Then, a team coming off a Big Ten championship victory, the seventh-seeded Michigan Wolverines were matched up with the Ten seeded Oklahoma State Cowboys in the first round. The people seemed to like the Wolverines this time, picking them 73.2 percent of the time. In the second round however, they were faced with the two-seeded Louisville Cardinals, one of the favorites to win the tournament. This matchup was a rematch from the 2013 National Championship game in which Louisville won. This time around, Louisville was picked by 68.7 percent of the country to win the rematch and advance, and 3.1 percent had them winning the title! Michigan started the game on fire, and did not slow down at any point during the game. They were the team who wanted to win more and that’s just what they did, winning 73-69.
Lastly, the highest seed to advance to the Sweet Sixteen and arguably, the hardest to predict, the eleventh-seeded Xavier Musketeers. Their first round matchup was against a sixth-seeded Maryland Terrapins team, who were picked to win by 56.5 percent of America. This was a pretty evenly balanced matchup, and when the Musketeers came out on top 76-65, the country was a little surprised but no one thought much of the upset. In the next round however, their matchup would much tougher with the Third seeded Florida State Seminoles. FSU was picked to win by 57.2 percent of the country, again not much of a difference. However, Xavier was an Eleven seed, and only 3.2 percent of brackets had them in the Sweet Sixteen. So when the Musketeers came out and dominated the Seminoles 91-66, they showed that they were indeed a better team than the majority of people thought and are now ready to make even more noise in upcoming rounds.
Obviously, not all of the games that were played were upsets. We had favorites win, with some nail biters, especially Oregon vs Rhode Island. After Oregon star Chris Boucher suffered a season ending knee injury most analysts didn’t expect for Oregon, third-seeded, to come out and beat the fourteenth-seeded Iona Gaels. They came out and proved them wrong, putting the Gaels in their dust. This brought them to their game against the eleven-seeded Rhode Island Rams, again the experts had predicted no. Oregon didn’t let that discourage them and they prevailed behind Tyler Dorsey’s 27 points including the game winning three with just under a minute to play. They will play the hot Michigan team in the next round.
Overall, this has been one of the most exciting tournaments in recent years so far, and with the Sweet Sixteen beginning tonight at approximately 6:40 p.m. on CBS, we will have to watch and see what team is this years Cinderella story.
