After Homecoming Week, students tend to experience a crash, with no similar event to look forward to until winter break. Since last Homecoming, one of the most successful dances in recent years, students have started to buzz about the possibility of York holding a second dance for all grade levels. Little do most know, Student Council has already begun determined efforts to hold this rumored dance.

“We have created announcements and other forms of publicity to inform the student body of our mission,” said co-chair on Student Council’s dance committee, Grace Maietta, sophomore. “We made a google form with multiple questions that will help us determine if students do or don’t want another dance.”

Three years ago, when the senior class of 2018 were freshmen, York attempted to hold a Winter Dance. The dance received little interest, selling only about thirty tickets.

“They tried to have a winter formal when I was a freshman, but they didn’t sell enough tickets, partly, because none of the upperclassmen were planning on going, which influenced lowerclassmen not to go either,” said senior Madison Park.  “Although now, I would for sure attend another dance. There’s too much of a break between homecoming and the end of the year with prom.”

Similar to the seniors, who have been teased with the idea in the past, sophomores and freshmen have expressed eager interest in having a dance. This is because, unlike upperclassmen, homecoming is the only all school dance they are able to experience.

“Homecoming was a really great opportunity to get to see and meet a lot of my friends,” said freshman Daniela Fiore.  “A second dance would be a great opportunity to do that again.”

Student Council is very driven to try and propose a dance. Before being able to start planning the actual dance, they must first prove interest to the administration in order for them to approve it.

“We’re hoping to learn about student interest by uploading a google form to the student body. We want to learn what the students of York actually want. Things like whether it should be casual or formal, or what time of year we should hold it,” said Maietta. “After we figure out what the student body wants, and we can possibly pick a theme or maybe a different location. If it’s a smaller crowd than we wouldn’t have to do it the field house, and it might be easier to get funding.”

An important choice that needs to be made when organizing the dance is the attire of the dance and other aspects like theme and venue. The google form is a great way to collect input on what the body actually wants.

“I’d want the dance to be the kind of thing where you get to dress up and look nice,” said Junior Emma Czech. “You don’t really get to dress formal with your friends other than homecoming or, if you’re an upperclassmen, prom.”

Although some students may want another formal dance, there are others that are looking for something a little different to Homecoming or Winter Formal.

“A more casual dance would be cool. Not like Homecoming. Homecoming is pretty formal. Maybe like a 60s theme or something like that. Something to spice it up a bit just something different,” said sophomore Aidan Frank

Although student interest appears to be high, staff, the people who would chaperone the dance, don’t seem to be as consistent or optimistic.

“We’re probably not going to be allowed to have a dance this year because there aren’t enough chaperones that will sign up,” said Maietta. “But hopefully for next year, we’ll get it.”

In order to make sure this dance doesn’t fail like previous winter dances, it needs to be as exciting and engaging as Homecoming, which means that a large number of students need to be eager to attend.

“The dance should have something similar to homecoming spirit week because that’s why homecoming is so fun,” said junior Emma Czech.

The main focus for Student Council is now finding students that are enthusiastic about attending a second dance.

“I would 100% attend another dance,” said Frank. “Something to spice it up a bit, just something different.”
