Justin and Selena: Perfect Match or Perfect Storm?
Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez have been the epitome of an exhausting on and off relationship since the start of their unforeseen romance in February of 2011. With recent rumors of a rekindled romance between the two singers, Dukes are skeptical yet eager to see if the relationship is permanent this time around.
“I really want them to get back together; they’re one of my favorite couples,” sophomore Cara McGovern said. “They always seem to find each other again, so I think this time will be really good for them.”
Despite the optimism some have for the future of Gomez’s and Bieber’s relationship, the two celebrities have experienced many obstacles throughout their relationship that may have caused turmoil between the two.
For instance, in an interview with W magazine in February of 2016, Gomez explained her frustrations with Bieber: “I honestly am so done. I care about his health and well-being, but I can’t do it anymore.”
To quote her own lyrics, Gomez is “sick of that same old love”.
Like Gomez, sophomore Amanda Polach recognizes the troublesome relationship of Gomez and Bieber.
“I don’t think they should get back together because they’re so problematic,” Polach said. “They’re going to end up writing songs about each other if it doesn’t work out. I don’t like it.”
With both Gomez and Bieber writing and performing music, it is said that Gomez’s song “The Heart Wants What it Wants” is about Bieber, and Bieber’s song “What Do You Mean?” is about Gomez.
Gomez and Bieber’s love has outlasted setbacks in the past which encourages fans to stay hopeful for a relationship.
“They’re really cute, and I feel like they went through a lot but they’ve matched up together now,” freshman Grace Doyle said. “I think they make each other happy, and you always see them when paparazzi are taking pictures; they’re always smiling and laughing.”
On Nov. 2, Gomez was spotted at Bieber’s hockey scrimmage where she wore his jersey later on. Additionally, on Nov. 6, the two went to church together.
Time will tell whether a relationship becomes permanent for Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber, but in the meantime, they have many Dukes rooting for them at York.
“They bring out the best in each other,” freshman Lillian Crow said. “Even though everyone has problems, they seem to always find a way to get back to each other. They were each other’s first love and they will always have feelings for one another.”
