Garden Club sells flowers to raise money to plant other flowers
Garden Club is a club that relies heavily on warm weather and the sun to carry out their daily activities. However, in case you haven’t noticed, those two things are in short supply these days. So, Garden Club took advantage of this “off time” and the season of love to raise some funds that they can use come spring between Monday, Feb. 12, and Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2018.
“We needed money to buy soil for the next planting season,” said freshman Emma King, who sat at the Garden Club fundraiser stand. “People are really seeming to enjoy the flowers and the experience, probably because they are caught up in the feelings of Valentine’s Day.”
The club sold flowers of varying colors to students for one dollar a stem. These flowers, roses in particular, were used by many as a token of affection in the days leading up to Valentine’s Day.
“It was really convenient to be able to just buy the flowers at a reasonable price at lunch, rather than having to go to the store,” sophomore Anthony Aguilar said. “It was kind of a trifecta for me, cheap flowers, nice flowers, and I knew I was supporting a good club here at York.”
According to Mr. Rayan, one of the Garden Club sponsors, they raised a total of $374.25, which keep in mind comes from selling flowers that costed one dollar each. Additionally, they were sold out on Wednesday by fifth period.
“Next year we will definitely bringing more to sell,” Rayan said. “The proceeds will add to the flower beds this upcoming spring.”
If you are interested in joining Garden Club this spring, and helping use these newly acquired funds to improve the garden spaces at York, then you can attend their next meeting on Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2018 after school in Mrs. Yun’s room, A373.
