Many people crave coffee; it’s addictive, whether mixed with cream and/or sugar or even cocoa powder. At this point in your life, you may not even crave coffee anymore, it may be a necessity for survival with the stressful waking hours of school, homework, and extracurriculars.
If you mix the coffee cravings of you and your friends and the proximity of the Windy City, why not find some great new places to satisfy that caffeine addiction? Below are a collection of four Chicagoland based coffee shops that could be your new favorite coffee retailer.
Now, let’s go on a coffee tour!
The first location on our java journey is Dark Matter Coffee. In the Chicagoland area there 4 locations with some out-of-this-world names: Osmium, Star Lounge, The Mothership, and Meddle Coffee bar. There are always the in-house beverages which have a variety of flavors for coffee connoisseurs, but they also have collections of their own flavored beans. Each coffee bean is roasted by Dark Matter and go through a fermentation process which gives the coffee beans a more delicious flavor. They also follow a recipe, one that’s not new in the slightest, but still gives the coffee a stronger, richer flavor. Also available in-stores or online for purchase is merchandise and their crazy named coffee beans like Giant Steps or Mastodon.

The next stop on our coffee tour is called The Wormhole: an 80’s themed coffee destination on Milwaukee Ave. Inside, the walls are lined with 80’s movie posters like “Heathers”, “Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice” and the like, with handfuls upon handfuls of memorabilia. This coffee scented 80’s flashback produces the average beverages one would plan to see at a coffee house, along with an assortment of their own creations, including the “Koopa Troopa,” a peanut butter mousse and dark chocolate latte and the “Honey Bear,” a local honey latte, along with other special flavors.
Check out this 1980’s place at 1462 N. Milwaukee Ave, and taste test the flavors they have to offer.
Our next coffee joint is Intelligentsia. If you want to plan a day dedicated to coffee you could head down Milwaukee Ave to find one of the many Intelligentsia locations and then the next locale on this caffeine course. With six locations scattered throughout Chicago, Intelligentsia makes one mean mocha and serves a variety of other caffeinated beverages. Depending on where you’re planning on spending your weekend, either walking down Milwaukee Ave or passing time in Millennium Park, you can find this phenomenal coffee. Just use that smartphone that’s stuck in your hand and find the closest one! I promise, it’s worth it!
There are so many locations where you can enjoy this brand of coffee, a few being:
- 2642 N Milwaukee Ave.
- 1609 W Division St.

With there being so many cool corners to find in Chicago, the list of where to go next is endless, but you don’t necessarily need to travel into the city to find a new refreshing coffee spot.
The final stop on this short coffee tour is slightly closer to home, located right on York road in Oakbrook. Residing at 2050 York Road, Steam Coffee Company is a local business that serves a variety of coffees, teas, and a selection of delicious breakfast snacks to accompany whatever you’re drinking. With a rustic vibe, this is a splendid place to catch up with friends, respond to some emails, or maybe even make a dent in your homework, but then again why would you want your obnoxious math homework getting in the way of you enjoying a hot cup of joe? If you aren’t looking to escape into the crowds of the Windy City, you might want to check out this place for a hot drink on a cold day.
