AirPods: The social divide

January 25, 2019

With the new year coming into full swing and with school back in session, you may have noticed many more students sporting the Apple AirPods. With the growing number of people using AirPods to listen to music, there is increasing tension between those students who use AirPods and those students who listen to music by means of regular earbuds.

Although AirPods come with a hefty price tag, the benefits avid users claim the AirPods come with allows for them to rise above everyone else, fueling the social divide.

Some students think AirPods are worth the money, while others take the side that AirPods are overrated and are just a scheme by Apple to drain the wallets of millions across the world.

“People who don’t have AirPods are missing out on A LOT and should totally go spend 160 dollars on AirPods right now,” junior Aleksina Jovic said. “You can listen to music without a cord coming out like the normal earbuds also they come in handy when working out or playing sports”.

Many other avid AirPod users claim that the AirPods come with benefits beyond listening to music without a cord.

“When I put my AirPods™ in, I feel a rush, the kind of rush you get from crashing a car,” sophomore Sam Walsh said. “Having AirPods is the best way to flex as hard as I possibly can on anyone and everyone that listens to music through wires.”

Despite the appeal that comes along with the wireless AirPods, many are put off by the price tag that comes with purchasing two little earbuds.

“Maybe one day Apple will release a cheaper product one that does not require you to sell a majority of your organs to buy,” junior Luke Montgomery said,

Montgomery, an anti-AirPod activist, like so many at York, has taken note of the divide these wireless earbuds have caused. He had realized that AirPods are tearing our society apart.

“Everyone walks around school listening to Tupac or Hannah Montana on their AirPods,” junior Luke Montgomery said. “In about 5 months no one will even be talking anymore.”

This one student who wishes to remain anonymous sums up the AirPod epidemic best:

“I refuse to answer any questions because you do not have AirPods.”
