“Nothing Knocks a Duke Down”

York staff members gather to support fellow teachers

With all of the new teachers arriving at York, English Department Chair Mr. Ryan Doherty knew he needed to help initiate the family aspect of the school. What better way than supporting some of our favorite teachers? Ms. Pauley, Ms. Scanlan and Ms. Kennedy-Brooks have all been diagnosed with chronic illnesses and are going though everyday fighting to stay strong.

On Wednesday, September 3, 192 York teachers and staff from every department wore shirts that read: “Nothing Knocks a Duke Down.” With these shirts, teachers support the trend of showing emotional support for those around you.

At Mr. Doherty’s former school, Metea Valley, they had a day just like this to help support one of their teachers. Doherty thought he should share this idea with the York community to help “emotionally support these teachers.”

As a York graduate, Mr. Doherty has experienced both sides of York and knows how close the students and teachers can be—“the York family” he calls it.

Even though he is new to the school, Doherty wants to make sure we don’t let our busy schedules get in the way of supporting each other.

“We get busy, but we need to be reminded that, with all of the time we spend together, we are a family and we do support each other,” Mr. Doherty said.
