Staff escape with a victory in senior vs. staff volleyball game
February 28, 2020
The annual Senior vs. Staff volleyball game was held in the Green and White gym on Thursday, Feb. 20. This year’s match saw three close games, with the staff securing a win in the final set.
All three games were down to the wire, with the staff delivering late in the 3rd match to solidify the victory. The win came as a surprise, as the staff did little to no preparation for the game.
“As a team, we didn’t really prepare for the game,” science teacher Adam Brown said. “In years past we’ve held a practice after school, but we haven’t done that in a handful of years.”
Before the game, students cheering for both sides packed the stands. Even with a lack of preparation, the staff came in with experienced members. One of many being Brown.
“I play in a recreational volleyball league once a week, which keeps me reasonably fresh,” Brown said.
The staff struck first and won the first game. However, the seniors shifted the momentum with a 2nd-game victory.
“My favorite moment of the game was seeing the teachers get nervous, they were talking smack,” senior varsity volleyball player Seona Albue said.
In a back-and-forth fashion, the staff squeezed by the seniors to take the crown.
“It feels awesome to beat them [seniors]!” English teacher Benjamin Carrillo said. “I like seeing them the next day in the hallways, to give them a little nod that says, ‘sorry kiddo, better luck next time’.”
Playing in a high energy volleyball game is one reason staff and seniors sign up to play in the event, in addition to spreading school spirit.
“As you can see, many people are here,” senior varsity volleyball player Sydney Krueger said. “Everyone came out to support and play, everyone got hype, and it was so fun.”
The senior vs. staff volleyball game is a tradition that helps define the culture at York High School that we partake in daily.
“People come to support their friends and teachers,” chair committee Jackson Lukas said. “With that, they bring the duke spirit.”
