York Mathletes prepare for upcoming competitions
Coached by Mr. Hall and Mrs. Lahti, the York Math Team strives to develop new problem solving strategies which will in turn improve thinking skills all while meeting new people who also enjoy math.
Competitions are held about 8 times a year on weekday evenings and 2 Saturdays at different high schools and colleges. These fun and exciting competitions have 3 main events: Individual, Team, and Oralists. Individual scores and the top 3 team scores are combined when figuring out the results for the competition. The Oralist has the task of being given a difficult topic they probably haven’t learned (but will learn eventually during the meetings) and explain the topic to the math teachers and judges. At the end of competitions, mathletes get to win certificates and ribbons.
Despite the immense academic effort put into the math team, the York Mathletes also have some fun as well. At the end of the majority of evenings, the mathletes compete to win the candy bar contest. During meetings, you get to hang out with your friends while learning new math lessons.
