On Septmeber 19th it seemed as if everyone was going crazy over Apple’s newest release, the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. Now that it’s been here for a while, people have had time to figure out if this phone is actually as awesome as everyone expected it to be.
So, what’s new about the iPhone 6? Not much.
The main thing Apple did was create larger and thinner phone, giving the 6 a screen size of 4.7 inches and a width of 6.9 millimeters. The 6 Plus was just a little larger, with the screen at 5.5 inches big and 7.1 millimeters wide. The iPhone 5 and 5S have a screen size of 4.8 inches and are 7.6millimeters wide. With the new phones Apple created a bigger, brighter display, although customers found that the new size wasn’t necessary.
“The iPhone 6 is an alright size,” Mackenzie Wilkinson, sophomore, said. “And the size of the iPhone 6 Plus is just ridiculous.”
Apple also introduced a new update to their operating system, iOS 8. It has a few new features, like the ability to respond to texts while still keeping other apps open, quick access to your most recent contacts, and some new keyboard settings like predictive text. Other than that, iOS 8 is almost exactly the same as iOS 7.
Overall, the new iPhone 6 doesn’t seem to be worth $200, and the 6 Plus definitely isn’t worth $300.
But if that’s the case, why did Apple sell more than 10 million phones in its opening weekend alone? The answer is pretty self explanatory: People want the newest iPhone simply because it’s the newest iPhone.
“Some people wanted it because of the bigger size, but most people wanted it just because everyone else did.” Said Blythe Dolby, sophomore.
The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus only have a few extra new features that the fifth generation iPhone’s don’t have, which is why there have been reports of customers not liking the iPhone 6 as much as they thought they would.
“Everyone wanted it right away.” Wilkinson said. “They wanted to look cool by having the newest iPhone even though they didn’t really need it.”
Ultimately, people bought the new iPhone just do go along with the crowd and have the ability to say “Hey, I have the newest iPhone”, without stopping to realize that they didn’t really need it in the first place.
