Wrestling strives for success in West Suburban Conference
Wrestling is a brutal sport– it physically wears down every part of the human body, from the head down, physically as well as mentally. Simply put, the ending of a wrestling match is the most accurate result of any sport. It’s really just one person’s strength and stamina versus another person’s strength and stamina. York wrestling has done a good job at mastering the craft of wrestling for the 30-plus years Head Coach Terry Clarke has been at the helm. This season, York is vying for a top spot in the West Suburban Conference.
“Last year, we finished 5th in conference, which is disappointing for us. Because we have quite a few returning wrestlers, I think we can perform at a much higher level this season,” Coach Clarke said.
This year’s team — led by seniors Steven Berg, Taylor Hoffman, Tyler Kalinich and Joe Dunn, finally has a chance to prove they belong as one of the top teams in the conference.
“For us seniors, it is our last year to make everything happen and we all want the best out of everybody,” Hoffman said.
Along with the invaluable presence of the seniors, two juniors, Tommy Helton and Mike Ordonez– are leading the way for a strong set of underclassman.
“Ordonez and Helton are really proving themselves as incredible wrestlers,” junior Matt Finan said. “They are setting a good example for the rest of the team.”
Ultimately, the team knows it is in a robust state as long as IWCOA (Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association) Hall of Fame Coach Terry Clarke remains present.
“Coach Clarke is a great coach, and all he wants from us is the best. The experience he has allows for our entire team to succeed. He knows a lot of wrestling moves, and he helps to make sure our technique is spot on,” Hoffman said.
With Coach Clarke leading the charge for yet another season, York students should come out and support a well-respected, accomplished squad as they try to dethrone OPRF from the top of the West Suburban Conference and aim to shepard a hard working group of underclassmen.
