Swimming Preview
As York Boys Swimming begins yet another season, early morning practices and arduous dryland workouts ensue. Last season, the team finished 5th in conference. This season, they hope to exponentially improve their placement in the West Suburban Conference.
“This season, I’d say that our goal is to have greater success in conference, and individually, we would all like to drop time in our events,” junior John Blum said.
Despite each individual swimmer competing on their own during each race, the team aspect is much more indispensable than most people assume.
“Swimming is more of an individual sport compared to other sports, so to improve as a team we all have to be on the same page and put forth our best efforts in every practice and every race in the meets.” Blum said.
With proper discipline implemented by proven leaders, this group has the guidance and poise to become triumphant. Led by Coaches Mark Laurich and Dave Davis, this squad will always have the comfort of knowing they’re controlled by responsible headman. Ben Howlett, senior, is the captain for this years team, and has raved about the staff’s ability to lead the team to prosperity.
“Our coaches are big inspirations for the whole team. They all do an outstanding job with the job and keep us performing at our very best while teaching us valuable life lessons,” said Howlett.
As a whole, this years team has a chance to make an impact at state. Along with Howlett, senior Logan Frendries has a good chance at having the opportunity to compete at state this season.
“[Frendries and Howlett] are two seniors that most of the team looks up to. They both are extremely talented swimmers and they have great work ethic. They always show leadership and great people to look up to,” Blum said.
