Double state champion Connor Groya reflects on his past years at York
March 17, 2022
Connor Groya, a senior here at York known for his competitiveness, success and talent, has come a long way throughout his four years on the varsity swim team. His unique talent has led him to be known around the school and throughout the program as one of the best swimmers at York.
“I have been swimming year-round for 10 years,” Groya said. “I started off on a laid back summer swim team then also joined a more competitive club team. It has definitely been a rocky journey throughout the years, but I have learned to love the sport and love competing, especially while I was here at York.”
This year alone on the York Varsity Boys Swim Team, Groya has broken more than five records and has just recently became a two-time State Champion in the 50 and 100 free events.
“I am extremely proud of my accomplishments here at York,” Groya explained. “I am most proud of the things I’ve been able to accomplish as a team, helping qualify for two relays to state my sophomore year. Also what I’ve done individually, with the records I have been able to break at York and other schools.”
Not only has Groya had great success in the pool, he seems to have a lasting effect on everyone around him. Ryan Lisowski, a freshman on the varsity swim team, explained what it’s like to be around him.
“[I admire] his swimming ability, but also just the kind of friend he is to everybody,” Lisowski said. “No matter what level, who you are, what year you are, old or younger, he’s always a good friend to everybody.”
Groya is currently rounding up his last season here at York. Even though he is closing a chapter, he gets to start a new one next year swimming at the University of Minnesota.
“I am sad that this is my last season and that we are almost already at the end. I am going to miss my teammates, coaches and team activities a lot. However, I am very excited to see what the future holds at Minnesota, and I can’t wait to get up there.”
Groya could go down as one of the best swimmers to ever pass through the York swim program. As he leaves York, he also leaves a great reputation among teammates, coaches and even competitors.
“Connor takes the leadership role,” Lisowski said. “He’s like a role model for everybody, no matter what level of swim. Everybody kind of looks up to him as someone to strive for as a person, not only as a swimmer, but just the type of person he is.”
