York advanced dancers prepare for a performance of passion
March 1, 2023
Movement that provokes emotion is what York dance provides for their audience, a story, a message, an interpretation. York has two performance dance groups: Advanced Dance, in which students can take for their P.E. credit, and York Dance Company, an after school dance club. During Fine Arts Week, both will be performing Thursday morning
Advanced Dance will be performing four dances this year: “Seven Nation Army,” choreographed by professional dancers from Giordano Dance Chicago, “At Last,” “Duende,” and a spoken word piece. Advanced Dance works on not only their dances, but the emotion they need their choreography to emit.
“Overall I’d say fierce is the word {to describe the entire show} because the Giordano piece definitely has a lot of strength and come back to it, while the jazz piece has a lot of sass and just like, I am here, I am it, I am not here to play” Erin Pahl, junior, said.
Performance can be taxing for students but in the end the emotion that the dancers feel while moving, is the feeling that the audience takes away.
“I’m really excited,” junior Owen Dettman said. “I’m a little bit nervous because this is the most dance I’ve done in one year. That being said, we’ve all been working so hard. So it’ll be fun to go out there with my team and do our best.”
The York dance family is getting ready for their big performance and the students are eager to hit the dance floor with emotion and power.
“I want the audience to feel excited and just very playful,” Pahl said. “We’re ready to have fun and ready to party away.”
