Taking a foreign language class: why is it beneficial?

April 3, 2023

Whether you took a world language course because you are interested in the origin of the language and where that language is spoken, or simply because your parents forced you to, there are many benefits as to why you should be learning a new language.

Foremost, communication plays a large factor. Learning a new language can help you communicate with people from different parts of the world. By speaking their language, you show that you respect and value their culture, which can help build trust and understanding between people from different backgrounds.

Secondly, the advantages you gain as a traveler from learning a new language are very intriguing. Speaking a foreign language can make traveling much easier and more enjoyable. By being able to speak the language of the place you are traveling to, you not only connect with locals and understand their customs, but also navigate your way around a foreign country with ease.

Additionally, career opportunities play a huge role in why students, and even adults, choose to learn another language. Knowing a second language can enhance your career prospects. Many businesses operate globally, and employers often seek individuals who are bilingual or multilingual. By knowing a foreign language, you may have an advantage over other candidates when applying for jobs.

Lastly, but certainly not least, is cultural appreciation. By learning a new language, you also gain insight into the culture and traditions of the people who speak it. This can lead to a greater appreciation and understanding of different ways of life and help you become more accepting of diversity and overall more open-minded. Whether you consider yourself a more open-minded person already or not, it never hurts to try to understand a culture from a different perspective, plus you get to increase your already applied knowledge.

Overall, learning a foreign language increases your accessibility in both school and the “real world”, and can continue to benefit you for the rest of your life. And who knows, you may even learn that you actually like the class too.
