A controversial Grammys leaves audience anything but “Snooze”-ing

The 66th annual Grammys took place Sunday, Feb. 4 and left viewers with lots to talk about. With female dominated wins, some lack-luster performances, and controversial snubs the Grammys were a spectacle to say the least.

Days before starting the second leg of her world tour, Taylor Swift took home the prestigious Album of the Year award for her 10th studio album, “Midnights.” After accepting her award Swift announced her new album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” to be released April 19. Although an exciting speech for Swifties around the world, those who aren’t as big of a fan found the announcement to be without taste, stealing focus from other large artists at the awards.

Shining over Swift, many female artists experienced new found success. Miley Cyrus finally won her first Grammy: Record of the Year for “Flowers.” Phoebe Bridgers won the most Grammys of the night including three with her band, boygenius. Billie Eilish snagged Song of the Year with “What Was I Made For,” her single from the “Barbie” movie. Cyrus, Eilish, and Dua Lipa all had outstanding performances across the board. Olivia Rodrigo also performed her hit single “Vampire” as well but, compared to her 2023 VMAs performance, didn’t hit the bar.

One of the most controversial wins, New Artist, went to Victoria Monet. With competitors such as Noah Kahan, Ice Spice, Gracie Abrahams, and Coco Jones, many were shocked to see someone with less youth popularity win. Another shock was SZA’s only win being the Grammy for R&B Track after going into the night with the most nominations. However, SZA wasn’t the only artist snubbed this year. Lana Del Ray left the Grammys empty handed yet again.

Winning Best Rap Album as well as Rap Song and Rap Performance, Killer Mike had an extremely successful night. Unfortunately this came to an abrupt end when he was detained at an after party after assaulting a security guard. Lainey Wilson won Best Country Album for “Bell Bottom Country,” shocking Zach Bryan fans who assumed he had that in the bag.

The 66th Grammys was quite the eventful night. Women took most of the top awards, Taylor Swift became the first artist to ever win Album of the Year four times, and female dominated performances left fans in aw. This year was a large step for the Grammys, having been seen as over-looking female artists in the past five years. Overall, a huge step was made for women in the music industry, and we all got to enjoy some killer performances in the process.
