New sex education coming to York
In 2015, Erin’s Law–a new legislation that requires schools in Illinois to teach age-appropriate sexual assault and abuse awareness and prevention–will be presented to York students throughout the semester.
Freshmen, juniors, and seniors will have the option to attend an assembly with two sexual assault nurses from Elmhurst Hospital that will inform and speak about sexual assault and abuse in personal relationships. Starting in March, sophomore students will receive a similar lesson from one of the York Social Workers during their Driver’s Ed. class.
Social workers will go from class to class beforehand to inform students about what to expect in the assemblies and to let the students know that they have an option to opt out of it if wanted.
