RESPECT–our school environment and those who maintain it

On Wed., May 13, some seniors thought it would be a cute “prank” to leave papers lying around the stairs, hallways and floors of this school. However, this is not the first time students made a mess.

Some students see this behavior as playful and unintentionally harmful.

“Seniors were just fooling around, I guess,” Sophomore Angel Aldape, said.

If you ask me, it’s not fooling around; it’s destruction of property and disrespectful to all of our custodians. Our custodians work hard, but their work isn’t taken seriously by some students.

Let’s take a look at past transgressions. Students have destroyed streamers for Homecoming for three years in a row. The same thing happened for “Big Fish,” which is senseless considering the fact that their fellow students were working hard on these decorations, only for them to be torn to shreds. Don’t even get me started on the walls in the bathrooms where students show their “art skills.” While I admire art as much as the next guy–I don’t need to see it when nature calls.

“I think it only punishes the custodians,  who work very hard,” said Ms. Herbert, campus supervisor.

It not only punishes the custodians, but it also punishes the school environment. In case you haven’t noticed, we’re lucky. Not all high school students have the opportunity to learn in such a nice facility.

Here’s a little reality check, there are people who have to clean this stuff up for a living. They wash the floors, remove trash, clean the bathrooms, and generally care for the environment for York students. Seriously.

Mr Dicanio, another campus supervisor, agrees that it’s disrespectful to our hard-working custodians when students purposefully litter the hallways and stairwells.

“I think it’s very rude,” Dicanio said.

Mr. Arias, custodian, on the other hand, seemed to think that the whole mess could be avoided with more supervision.

The question is should we even need more supervision? I mean, we’re young adults for crying out loud.

So please, just knock off the pranks. These guys need to provide for their families, and we “adults” aren’t making it easier.

Sometimes I just wonder; where did we go wrong? Maybe it was hormones or maybe it’s manners. I pray that the classes of 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019, have the kindness to treat their fellow man the way that they want to be treated.
