Girls Tennis swings into midseason
Since late August, The Varsity Girls’ Tennis Team has been working hard and with the end of October marking the end of their season, they are more motivated than ever. Half way through their season, the Varsity Girls’ Tennis Team has been working hard. Having achieved a winning record thus far, top doubles player, Senior Abby Brigman along with her teammates cannot wait to see what the rest of the season has in store.
“I have high hopes for the end of the season and hope to do well in conference,” Brigman said, “We all have gotten along very well and work hard during practice.”
Thus far, this season has yielded great results for the Dukes and although facing some tough competition, the team feels confident in their record.
“We have been playing great tennis and any matches that we lost were all close losses.”Junior, Julia Riddle said,
When asked about her goals for the end of the season, Brigman said,
“Now that the season has started, the team’s goal is to get as many girls to state as possible, as well as have the underclassman gain experience on varsity.”
This year, unlike years past, the varsity team is dominated by a majority of underclassman talent.
“Our number one singles is Maja Shaw and number one doubles is Abby Brigman and Alex Hennessy but everyone has worked hard to maintain their spot on varsity,” Brigman said, “We are a younger team but we are all working hard to prepare for the next season.”
Senior night took place on Tuesday, September 29th. The Athletics Department provided each of the senior girl tennis players with red roses. In addition to the roses, each senior’s “little sister” made an animal themed poster for their “big sister”.
“This years team is a great group of girls who are all super nice. We all have grown closer over the season and have made some great memories including eating bagels at every big meet, jamming to music on the bus, and the Friday theme days,” Riddle said.
Although losing their final home game Tuesday night, the team came back determined and won wednesday’s game at Downers Grove North. Now they have a tough road of away games before sectionals begin on October 17th.
“We have had some ups and downs but overall we have a winning record and look forward to a great rest of the season.” said Claire Meyer, Senior.
Be on the lookout for more success from the Girls Tennis Team and come out and support the Dukes!
