What happened to Mrs. Drumm?
York’s Learning Commons (LC) had a new addition to their staff; most of you probably know her as an English teacher, but she’s made a slight career change.
Erica Drumm, who has been a English teacher for the last 14 years, made the decision to leave her teaching job and become the high school’s librarian.
The question is, why did she trade in being a teacher to hanging out in the LC?
“Though I still obviously love literature and writing, after fourteen years as an English teacher, I was excited to work with students and teachers of all subject areas,” Drumm said. “I think it’s important to change things up occasionally and my career move has truly reinvigorated me.”
Happy to have made a career change, Drumm works hard to make the LC a better learning environment for the students as well as the teachers.
Even though at times she misses her teaching job, she is able to enjoy her new environment and the new obstacles she has to overcome.
“I’m trying to build our collection to fulfill the interests of our students,” said Drumm. “Right now I’m working on our Graphic Novel collection – I’m learning a lot about DC, Marvel, and Manga! I’m also working on our virtual support – implementing a search bar that is more akin to what students will experience in college. Additionally, I’m in the midst of planning some programming (special events)- stay tuned.”
Though her job is full of new opportunities, there are some things that she misses about being a teacher. The main thing being the relationships that she was able to form with the students.
“As I mentioned before, it’s odd for me to not know the students with whom I’m working – it feels weird saying “sir” or “miss” because I don’t know student names,” said Drumm. “I miss the relationships that classroom teaching provides.”
Even though Drumm is no longer staying in the classroom, you are sure to find her in the learning commons. She loves the change of environment and couldn’t be happier. With all the latest improvements that she is making, the LC is sure to get a lot more attention!
