Recently, there has been a lot of talk on the crisis in Syria. Syrians are leaving their nation in large numbers and seeking refuge elsewhere. Here in the United States, the government is only allowing a certain number of refugees to enter. In Chicago there are 60 refugees.

Not only is Chicago helping refugees, but all around York students are giving back to our community as well. Junior Emily Landreth is the perfect example of donating to others. Starting her own clothing drive at York, Landreth is helping to make winter a little bit easier for those around us.

“RefugeeOne is an organization in Chicago that helps refugees from all over the world,” said Landreth, “They pick up refugees from the airport, help them find a place to live, and do many other things.”

Unfortunately, Chicago winters are among the worst in our nation according to a Forbes article.

“Many of the Syrian refugees have not experienced a Chicago winter,” said Landreth, “and they will need help getting coats and other winter gear to be prepared and warm for this winter.”

Model UN and FDA paired up in hopes of helping families close to us. Landreth, in Model UN, started the winter drive to collect all sorts of winter gear with help from Amanda Bardhoshi, co-president of FDA.

“We are collecting coats, scarves, gloves, and hats,” said Landreth, “and if anyone feels really generous, you can donate new bedding or blankets as well.”

It is amazing how others can inspire people to make a change in the world. Landreth was inspired by someone she follows on social media.

“I follow Humans of New York and he went to the middle east to help refugees,” said Landreth. “Then later, I read an article in the Chicago Tribune about RefgueeOne and what they do to help refugees. Then I asked myself, what can be done? What can I do?”

All students and staff at York are encouraged to donate any winter gear they can. One coat could help make a family happier in the coming winter. Drop off your donations outside of student services or in Mrs. Carlson’s room, C278. The drive ends on November 13th.
