Law team finds early success

Over the past two weeks, York Law Team has been to three different competitions: one in Lake County, one in Rolling Meadows, and one in Kane County. At each of the competitions, York has done fairly well, with awards given to individual members of the team.

On Sat., Feb. 20, York placed sixth place out of 30 schools. Three members of the York team won individual awards at this competition in Lake County; Alexandria Cahill and Valeria Martinez won the Best Attorney Award, and Lillian Alexandrova won Best Witness.

“It felt good to know I helped out my team,” said Alexandrova. “Being a witness isn’t just acting- it means knowing your team’s theory of the case.”

Another competition was on Wed., Feb. 24 in Rolling Meadows. Law team left during 7th period in order to get to the courthouse on time. Here, Alexandria Cahill won Best Attorney out of everyone in the entire competition which included over 13 schools.

The final formal competition before State took place on Sat., March 5 in Kane County. York’s Mark Edekara won Best Attorney and Lillian Alexandrova, once more, won Best Witness. The team is still awaiting York’s exact placement.

Edekara credits his coaches for helping him earn his award.

“I had great coaches,” said Edekara.

To practice for state, York will have two scrimmages in the next two weeks: one with Niles North, and one with Main South.

“We have a ton of potential,” said Cahill. “We started out really strong at our competition… we’ll only improve from there.”
