2016 Collage Concert showcases an eclectic blend of music and dance
On Wednesday, September 15, the the Department of Performing Arts hosted its 32nd annual Collage Concert in the Field House.
Parents, musicians, and dancers gathered in the field house to view the performances. This unique concert, which is very different from the ones seasoned concert-goers are used to, is a combination of band, jazz, orchestra, choir, and dance that has something for everybody–from flashy choral spirituals, to explosive percussive songs, to emotional classical pieces.
“It’s the only time all the music students can watch what each group is doing during class,” said Mike Pavlik, Director of Bands. “It broadens our sense of community.”
This communal support is felt both within the music department and from parents and audience members.
“I’ve been a teacher for nine years, and the community of Elmhurst has always been extremely supportive of the performing arts which has been one of the keys to the success of our program,” said Bill Riddle, Chair of the Department.
The first performance of the year was also the first ever for the amateur groups. Additionally, this was the final collage concert for the senior dancers and musicians.
“The Collage Concert is always super impressive because everyone had such little time to prepare, but everything usually goes smoothly,” said Morgan Taylor, senior. “It has been cool to see what all of the ensembles sound like now in comparison to a spring concert.”
The concert closed with highlights from Queen and then the fight song, played by the marching band. Students sprang from their seats enthusiastically upon hearing the tune of the fight song.
With the Collage Concert behind them, the performing arts departments will begin preparations for their individual holiday concerts.
