Stranger Things craze hits York

The thrilling Netflix-original, Stranger Things, a throwback to the ‘80s when science fiction was first made popular, is now captivating a wide variety of demographics– especially here at York.

When Joyce Byers’ (Winona Ryder) son Will (Noah Schnapp) goes missing in a remote town in Indiana, local police chief Hopper (David Harbour) takes over the case and discovers that there is much more than a kidnapping occurring.

Ever since the release on July 15, everyone has been commenting on the new series all over social media and highly recommending it.

“I was not really hooked at the beginning but because everyone was raving about it, I kept watching it,” said English teacher Laura Pfau. “It was truly word of mouth business.”

The show encompasses many genres such as mystery, romance, science, and horror. Due to the wide variety of genres, the Netflix-original brought in a huge audience. One specific audience that it brought in is fans of the 1980s.

“What hooked me was the fact that it’s a new show now but they were going back to all the ways people used to dress back then and how everything looked,” said senior Eric Rzeszutko. “I thought it was so cool and the amount of effort they put into it is crazy.”

The cliffhangers that each episode encompasses also keeps people going back to it.

“At first it was kind of confusing,” said senior Kati Potaczek. “You didn’t really know what was going on so I was like alright, I want to figure this out. So, I would keep watching”

In a poll conducted by York-hi, the majority of fans said that Eleven—the mysteriouslly powerful little girl—was their favorite character with Dustin—the goofy best friend of Will—coming in a close second.

“I love Dustin,” said senior Eva Milian. “He was just so funny and when his friends would fight, he was the voice of reason.”

Another popular character is Chief Hopper. Students and teachers alike loved the way his input in the show evolved over the episodes.

“I did not identify with any characters but I love Hopper,” said Mrs. Pfau. “His evolution as a character was amazing. I really want to know his story and why he cares about helping Joyce so much.”

A second season for Stranger Things was confirmed on August 31 and people cannot wait for it that they have already started to predict what will happen next.

“I wonder if there is going to be another virtual world,” said Kati Potaczek. “Or maybe it will be more about the lab.”

Whatever the theme of the second season may be, it will for sure be a success given that the reviews on the first season were so positive.
