In with the old, out with the new
Bring out your Birkenstocks and scrunchies! What’s old is new again. Vintage looks are being reintroduced into the modern fashion world with statement retro pieces, and everyone seems to be participating.
“I think it’s because people are getting tired of looking the same,” said senior Olivia Possley. “Vintage style gives people a way to be different.”
As trends come and go, style is timeless. With each coming year, new products are introduced into the fashion community and in such a fast-moving world there must be a reason vintage styles seem to stick.
“You can incorporate looks into your own personal style,” said frequent vintage shopper Taylor Freeman. “You can use tons of different products to benefit your sense of style. Everything is so unique”.
While unique vintage pieces are making their way back into people’s closets, are the trends really better than ever? Although many of the modernized classic styles are appreciated, some of the updated looks aren’t as embraced as others.
“I like that flared jeans and chokers are coming back but I don’t like culottes,” said Possley
While many agree on expressing a love for vintage fashion along with Possley, everyone has different preferences when it comes vintage eras.
“My favorite is the 70s. I loved the free spirit vibes everyone gave off and how everyone looked effortlessly chic,” said Ella Lawrence, junior. “My least favorite style era is the early 2000s– Juicy Couture sweatpants were not a good look.”
No matter what era you’re drawn to, there are a number of places to find pieces to cultivate your own vintage look. Vintage and consignment stores can be found all over.
“I go to any vintage store I can find,” said Possley. “When I go to a new town I always go online and see if there are any vintage stores nearby.”
You don’t have to travel to find a vintage store far away. What Knots, a Chicago-based vintage store, is nearby and owned by two experts in vintage.
“I started this store because I love vintage,” said co-owner, Courtney Terreault. “There is so much thought put in the pieces. Vintage was made to last.”
While the trend is mostly worn by young millennials and high school students, adults are taking part of this fashion revolution by selling their own vintage clothing online or at their own vintage shops, similar to
Terreault. It goes to show how vintage has been embraced, being so accessible for those who choose to add vintage elements into their style.
“These stores are easily accessible and have great deals,” said Freeman. “Products are long lasting.”
With new trends constantly mirroring those of the past, now is the time to gather your friends and hit vintage stores in your neighborhood to build your best fall closet yet.
“One of my favorite things is going with my friends to shop for vintage clothes,” said sophomore Siena Olson. “I love wearing vintage clothes, and I can’t wait to see what new trends come back from the past into the present.”
