Dukes win at pink out game

On Fri., Oct. 7, the Dukes won against Proviso West 31-12 on their home field. Because October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, students both on and off the field wore pink to support the cause.

“Dukes for a Cause” shirts were sold by York Cheerleading at the bookstore and half of the money raised in the sales was donated to The Bright Pink Organization. Students wore their pink shirts along with other pink gear. Both poms and cheer celebrated the theme of the game with pink bows and pom poms.

The team began the night strong, leading in the first half of the game. Their success energized those in the stands, the student section cheering for the team as they wrapped up the first half with a strong lead.

Although it was the coldest game of the season, students could barely feel the chill as they celebrated the team’s success throughout the game (and sipped hot chocolate sold at concession stands).

“As the team started scoring, everyone got really into the game. We were all dancing to marching band,” said senior Hanna Kikos. “It ended up being a party in the stands because we all love being with each other cheering on our boys (and marching band, can’t forget about them).”

The party continued into half time with York’s marching band, poms, and cheer putting on a talented show to keep up the energy in the stands. The cheer team also brought the kids they had worked with at their cheer clinic to the field to participate along with them.

The second half was just as successful as the first. As the clock ticked down, the team kept a strong lead. Their pink clad fans cheered them on and they ended the game with a 31-12 victory.

“I think it’s great that the guys won,” said sophomore cheerleader Evie Nudera, “Not only to help with their confidence in games to come, but also to help the fans cheer them on to more victories.”

Along with their victory, both the team and fans brought awareness to an important cause. Students in pink and green made it another great day to be a Duke.
