Meet the 2016-2017 Latina Dreamers
One of the largest clubs organized here at York, Latina Dreamers, has had a great beginning of the school year. With almost 50 girls in the club and ELL coordinator and counselor Diane Oliveros as their sponsor, they were able to win best representation of homecoming theme in this year’s hallway decorating competition.
With important events coming up for Latina Dreamers, the club’s president, Edith Reynaga, reiterates why she wanted to become the leader of these girls.
“I worked my way up to be president of Latina Dreamers because I thought it would be a good idea to manage the Latina club of York,” said senior Edith Reynaga. “I would like to become a social worker and I would like one day to come back and help the girls at York.”
Although the club’s name focuses on the Latina community, it is open for anyone to join.
“It’s very welcoming and you don’t have to be a Latina to join,” said senior club member Isabella Raimondi. “You make friendships that are strong and you learn a lot of team building and leadership skills.”
All week next week, Latina Dreamers are teaming up with Hispanos Unidos to celebrate national Hispanic heritage month with the rest of York. Currently, they are making skits for YTV that will play next week to inform York about Hispanic heritage.
They also welcome you to visit the commons every day during every lunch period. There will be an activity that every student can participate in that will be showcasing the Hispanic heritage.
Monday will be food sampling of traditional Hispanic foods, Tuesday is face painting, Wednesday will be a dance performed by the Latina Dreamers, Thursday is a food eating contest, and Friday will be a game day.
