After the buzzer rang, both teams brawled behind the Dukes’ net at the Varsity game on Fri. Sept. 15.

Last Friday night, the York Dukes Varsity and Junior Varsity teams took on the Providence Celtics in two very close games. Both teams managed to obtain a victory in the first home game of the season.

“We came out strong in the first period,” head varsity coach Bruce Turpin said. “We managed to score a couple quick goals early on.”

Two goals were put up on the scoreboard by junior Matt Anikiej and by senior Matt Atristain in the first period to take an early lead. Although, by the end of the second period, Providence was able to tie the game at two goals.

“We kind of sat in that lead and let them get back in the game in the second period,” Turpin said. ”But we were able to pull it together and managed to get a win.”

Late in the third period, junior Chris Lee managed to score the game-winning goal during a power play to secure the eventual 3-2 win.

“Everyone was cheering for York and everyone was so excited to see them win,” said sophomore Kevin Haller, who manages the music during games. “A lot more people showed up tonight than usual which I think helped motivate the players.”

With the lack of a football game Friday, many York students dressed up in white to help cheer on the hockey team. Fans brought an encouraging energy to the game.

“The fans were great, it was awesome to see so many people in the stands,” Turpin said. “Hopefully that continues throughout the season.”

Providence calls a timeout during the 3rd period in hopes of putting together a winning strategy against our beloved Dukes.

The hockey season has only just begun. There’s a lot to look ahead to as the team eases into the regular season on their road to the playoffs in late February.

“Our goal is to keep moving forward,” said Turpin as his plan for the season. “We’ve really got a good team this year.”
