As the football season comes to an end, the York cheer program moves into their competition season. Sophomore Abby Coglianese has been an important athlete on the junior varsity squad for the past two years and will contribute to her team’s success in the new season, just as she did while flying and performing at football games this fall.

Abby has been cheering for six years and hasn’t stopped pushing herself to help make her team succeed. Not only is she a strong flyer, but she is also taking on a role as a leader on her team this year. Cheerleading allows her to be an active member in school activities and create new relationships with her teammates.

“I have became a better leader because a lot of the incoming freshmen and new people to the team need to learn new cheers and stunts,” said Coglianese. “My friends and I, who have done cheer previous years, got to teach them those things.”

Abby’s diligence and positivity throughout the season has helped her team bond and work together. Her attitude at practice and games has created a more united team and fostered cohesive relationships among the athletes, and that has not gone unnoticed.

“Abby is super friendly and positive towards everyone on the team and definitely helped all the girls bond and really get to know each other,” said junior Alice Martin, JV team captain. “Also, she is always able to cheer someone up and always has a positive attitude.”

Abby’s positivity and commitment to her team is also reflected through her skills. She is constantly working to get new tumbling skills and to improve her flying technique. The whole team’s dedication to their sport and willingness to try new stunts has a huge impact on their impressive performance at football games, as well as on the improvement of each team member.

“My teammates all work hard to hit their stunts and never hesitate to try something new,” said Coglianese. “This motivates me to try harder and try new things as well. I would really like to work on my tumbling skills and become a stronger tumbler for competitions because that is one of the major focuses during the winter season.”

Positivity and drive is evident in Abby’s attitude and  will be essential for her team’s success as they head into competitions. Be sure to catch Abby and her team performing at basketball games this winter!
