Unconventionally Successful: The prom event took everyone by surprise with its success and appearance

May 20, 2021

Despite the lack of stars, the Starry Night themed prom on Saturday, May 15 turned out to be a prosperous event for the seniors. The prom that was to be held in the outdoor track field was moved to the fieldhouse due to the weather. Parents and faculty managed to arrange a successful prom for our seniors. Several seniors explained how the prom decorations and activities exceeded their expectations.

“The atmosphere, decorations and attention to detail at prom absolutely exceeded my expectations,” Student Council president senior Haley Brown said.  “I know a lot of people who were unsure about the event being moved inside and different from normal years but they did an amazing job with the decorations, raffles and food at the event.”

Inside the fieldhouse, there was a mini-golf course, a foam ax-throwing game and an inflatable skeeball game for the seniors’ entertainment. Photo booths were also available to seniors to take home their own pictures of the night. Raffles were held for all attendees with prizes including Apple AirPods, Country Thunder four day tickets and more. Food trucks were located outside ready to serve tacos, churros and mini burgers with fries.

“Hearing from the majority of the seniors, prom was actually a lot better than what people thought,” senior and prom king Jeffrey Grace III said. “It ended and started at the perfect time. My favorite part was seeing everyone enjoy and have fun because we have been through a rough year and seeing people have a good time at their prom is all you could want.”

Even with different speculations about prom, many seniors agree that the prom gave them a sense of closure after a long year of the pandemic.

“My favorite part was kind of seeing everybody there and celebrating,” senior Grace Callen said. “I think that [was] kind of providing a sense of closure because it was something that we’ve all been looking forward to since last year or throughout your freshman year. And as a senior, we didn’t get a lot of normal celebrations that we would’ve gotten.”

Overall, the seniors enjoyed all aspects of the prom. The night ended with a premiere of the senior video featuring pictures of seniors during their childhood and special clips from their elementary and middle school teachers.

“This event was awesome but sad because most of the people we won’t see again and it allowed us to enjoy and spend time with people we may never see again,” Grace said. “The senior video was very touching and it sums up to [tell] us our next chapter is here. I wish everyone the best and wish them the best of luck down the road.”
