As the year progresses, York’s boys cross country team is in full swing, following a rigorous summer training camp. Although last season may not have been among the team’s most successful, head coach Charlie Kern is confident in the team’s growth and development as they prepare for the upcoming season.
The athletes have been putting in significant effort, running daily along the Prairie Path. Each run ranges from 15 to 60 minutes and is supplemented by a specific exercise routine before and after to prevent injuries and ensure proper recovery. The team has evolved since the 2023 – 2024 season and Kern emphasized the increased experience among the senior athletes.
“The biggest difference is that we are now senior-dominant, with athletes who have had experience,” Kern said. “They’ve had a taste of varsity competition. They were probably a bit fearful of it, whether they would admit it or not, but now we should be much more confident in knowing that we belong with these people we’re racing against.”
The seniors on the team hold a critical role, as they often make up the “Top 7″—the group of runners who compete in the highest-level events or meets. However, this doesn’t diminish the importance of underclassmen. Last season, a sophomore impressed the coaching staff by earning a spot on the Top 7, and he’s back this year, aiming to reclaim his position. Cross country is still a team sport at heart though, and senior runner Zach Saltiel gave his thoughts before heading to a conference race with his team.
“There’s a lot of good teams there at it’s the whole state, and it’s gonna be really hot, but hopefully they move up the race,” Saltiel said. “-It’s gonna be a really fun experience.”
As the season progresses, team morale remains strong. The athletes continue to challenge themselves daily, but they aren’t doing it alone. The support of every coach and runner has been essential to the team’s development, providing the tools needed for success. Additionally, the fans play a vital role, offering encouragement and motivation.
“Oct. 19, here at Berens Park, York is hosting the conference meet,” Kern said. “The first race will be at 9 a.m. and both the boys and girls teams will be participating, so it’s a great opportunity for all of the York runners to be supported.”
