As the Girls Track and Field team open the 2014-2015 indoor season, they begin their training for their first invitational meet on Friday, Feb. 13. With many of the athletes improving their skills by joining cross country the season before and practicing during the off season shows that many of the girls are preparing to achieve victory this year.

“I believe that many of the girls have been working hard for the new season not just for   themselves, but for the team as well,” said junior Mikayla Frigo. “Also bringing the skills that we learned from cross country will give us a boost in winning this season.

Since they have some of their seniors and starters fully recovered from last years injuries they should be able to improve upon last year’s record.

“Having twisted my ankle last year, I wasn’t able to compete with my teammates and it made me feel as if I held the team back from winning, but since my ankle is all better I plan contributing a lot this season,” said senior Shante Dansby.

The girls track has a well balanced team due to their average scores in distance and sprints.

“We had a reasonably successful last year.  We finished middle of the pack in  conference, qualified a distance runner, a field event and a sprint relay team for state.  Our field events were a huge strength for us last year,” head coach Annette Schulte said.

This year’s field events look promising this year as well. In terms of individuals, senior pole vaulter Abbey Waltz  set a York Indoor Track and Field record, paving the way for a potential top three finish at state this year.

Having good chemistry among the team is necessary for a team to succeed, and they show that through motivation among one another.

“All of our seniors are stepping up and taking leadership roles, its been incredible to watch because I know they will bring the best out of everyone on the team,” head coach Annette Schulte said.
