Football season is back at York as the Dukes first game is this Friday. Beginning his second season, ead coach Matthew Monken, is excited to see the team improve from last year. York has struggled with losing seasons recently, but is invigorated with the beginning of a new season and another chance to start fresh. That chance begins this Friday against a tough competitor — New Trier High School.

After several seasons of missing the playoffs this years team has their eyes set on making the playoffs. Last year the boys fell just short of the five victories needed for a potential playoff spot with a 4-5 record.

“We really are going to focus on not getting down on ourselves and to all come together, a good mental season”, said Matthew Wozny, senior.

This year’s coaches are confident with how the team looks.

“Pretty balanced on both sides [offense and defense]”, said Safeties Coach, Bill Kroger.

“A big thing, the team spent a lot of time in the weight room. Thirty five players lifting over 200 lbs. Being stronger helps you feel better physically on the field,” said Monken. “The team has put a lot of time in the off-season and they are coming off a strong summer camp.”

Coach Munken and Coach Clark coach the offensive team.

Like any other team, York faces a lot of challenges. York is in the West Suburban Conference (Silver) and has a tough schedule. York faces teams like Hinsdale Central, Glenbard West, and OPRF. They already have a bit of a challenge with only having four home games this year.

“Focus on one game at a time and [we hope to have] a good competition in conference,” said Monken.

The team always has making the playoffs a goal in mind but in order to get there, the team does not want to think too far ahead.

One thing the team is really looking forward to this year is the fans coming out to support them.

“Duke fans are a big support system”, said Tommy Helton, senior.

The first home game is next week at 7:30 pm so come out and support the Dukes.
