More girls than ever before are coming out this fall for the Girl’s Powder Puff Football game. With about 100 girls on each the junior and senior teams, Wednesday night’s game is looking to be more competitive than ever before. Students, staff, and families will all attend the 6:30 pm game at the York Stadium to see the junior girls face off against the senior girls in a game of flag football.

“This year we have six boys coaching each team because we had so many girls sign up,” said Kelly Polte, senior, who has been organizing the game. “Six senior coaches. Six junior coaches. They plan practice, and they plan all the plays.”

As for the rules, there will be normal flag football rules with these exceptions: ten minute quarters, no kick offs, and no tackling. Kicking has been removed from the game due to popular demand.

There are a lot of athletes coming out this Wednesday to play. Seniors and juniors alike are getting excited.

“The Senior class is pretty athletic; but as for the Junior class, I don’t think they have as strong of athletes,” Polte said. “I feel like it’s going to be a pretty good game– we’ll see how practice goes. Senior Bailey Stearns is really fast and quick. Last year she scored some touchdowns. I’m also excited to see Jackie Saco play for the junior team.”

While most enjoy this fun Homecoming tradition, some argue that the Powder Puff game is demeaning to women. Bailey Stearns, senior, sees powder puff as a great opportunity for girls.

Stearns said, “Powder Puff gives girls an opportunity to showcase their athletic talent.”

Polte was more focused on the fun that goes into Powder Puff.

“The Powder Puff tee shirts this year are two football helmets with tiaras,” Polte said speaking on the tradition of Powder Puff. “The bottom line is that it is an event to get people involved with Homecoming week and people involved in all sorts of activities. It is one of our oldest traditions at York and I think it’s really great to get the girls involved.”

Students are enthusiastic about the upcoming game. All York students, staff, and families are welcome to come out on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. to witness the game between the senior and junior girls.
