For those of you who do not know, Groundhog Day happened last week on Tuesday, Feb. 2.
Every year, Groundhog Day occurs all over the United States and Canada, but the largest celebration is in the town of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania with the town’s groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil.
It originated in 1887 when the editor of the Punxsutawney Spirit began writing about the town’s groundhog as an official “Groundhog Day meteorologist.”
If the groundhog comes out of his hole and sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter. If there is no shadow, the groundhog’s prediction is that Spring will come early.
Although many people believe that the groundhog’s prediction will come true, The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says that Punxsutawney Phill’s prediction is only about 45% accurate.
“I think Spring is actually coming,” said Nia Vaia, junior. “This month is supposed to be in the 30’s and 40’s and we’ve had a pretty mild winter. The groundhog is always right.”
