What you DIDN’T know about the Shamrock Shake
It’s coming this spring. It’s big. It’s green. It’s 820 calories and 23 grams of fat. It’s the long-awaited Shamrock Shake from McDonald’s!
Officially released on Feb. 9, the Shamrock Shake is an absolute favorite among Micky D fans. For those who don’t know the magic of this milkshake, it’s a vanilla and mint ice cream shake, with a tint of green food coloring to give it a shamrock look, hence the name.
The Shamrock Shake was born in 1970 and was originally a lemon-lime sherbet shake; but then the classic shake got a makeover in 1983 when mint flavoring was added and sherbet was removed.
Only seven years after it’s initial debut, McDonald’s wanted to give the shake its own advertising mascot.
Meet Uncle O’ Grimacey, the uncle of McDonald’s Grimace. He used to visit Grimace during March, bringing with him his incredibly delicious Shamrock Shakes.
Unfortunately, Grimacey was discontinued in 1985 but is still considered an official McDonald’s mascot.
Besides Uncle O’Grmacey, McDonalds offered a different spinoff of the Shamrock Shake. In 1980, McDonalds had a spinoff of their classic milkshake called the Shamrock Sundae, which was a vanilla ice cream cup topped with a classic mint green Shamrock syrup.
Due to low sales, the product was discontinued after only a year. It serves them right trying to remake the perfection that is the Shamrock Shake.
Despite the delicious varieties, customers need to be careful; this divine dessert comes with a price. Not to your wallet, but to your waistline.
Like I said earlier, a (large) Shamrock Shake will have 820 calories and 23 grams of fat. As for the other sizes, a medium green cream in a cup will pack in 660 calories and 19 grams of fat; a mini mint shake contains 530 calories and 15 grams of fat.
But we still love our shake. Heck, without that love, the Shamrock Shake wouldn’t be here!
In fact, the Shamrock Shake was discontinued nationally in the early ‘90s due to the lack of love.
But its cult following and huge Internet presence led to it being re-introduced in the late 2000’s. Thank you internet, for once, you did something right.
But you better hurry and grab your shake today, because it is available for a limited time only. The Shamrock Shake will continue until supplies last!
