DVF Then and Now

In 1970, a new designer walked into the fashion world with a suitcase filled with silk jersey fabric and high hopes. For the next 4 years, Diane Von Furstenberg would use that fabric to create a garment known as the “wrap dress”. That dress was the beginning of a line of dress wear that would go on to produce a $480 million industry. What brought Von Furstenberg to the table wasn’t just an iconic dress and fancy shoes, but that she exposed women to a brand that made them feel independent and sexy.

This year, Von Furstenberg has launched a new brand of tote bags called “Secret Agent”. The bag goes from daytime to nighttime, a two in one. The tote is big enough to cram all the junk you have in it, but if you need an evening bag the front pocket zips off into a clutch. “Women want something that is practical but looks sexy. It’s the ultimate accomplice for a DVF woman,” Von Furstenberg explained in an interview. Who exactly is this DVF woman, the “Secret Agent”? The beautiful Karlie Kloss.

In an interview with Vogue UK, Von Furstenberg explained why Kloss was made for the part. “Karlie is perfect for the autumn/winter 2015 collection because she is much more than just a supermodel. She is intelligent, strong, sexy and in command of her own destiny. Karlie also embodies the multi-faceted nature of a woman, which is really what we wanted to communicate”. But that’s not all that the 23-year-old has embodied. This year, the model announced she will no longer be a Victoria’s Secret Angel and has moved on to print work. She has been featured in ad campaigns for Express, Joe Fresh Denim, Marella, and Kate Spade. Not to mention she started attending classes at NYU… just in case her looks don’t hold out.

With the new DVF tote out and the autumn/winter collection being worked on, Diane is quite busy. It’s safe to say there isn’t anything this woman can’t accomplish. From being a princess to a style icon, Diane is adding reality TV star to her list of endeavors. Season 1 of House of DVF featured 8 girls who were given an opportunity to be part of the DVF team. When the show first aired last year, Von Furstenberg was very skeptical about how it would all turn out. But by the end of all the intimidating meetings, drama at the Hamptons, and New York Fashion Week chaos, one girl was left impressing Diane the most… Brittany Hampton, a stylist for Nickelodeon. Now Hampton is traveling the world representing DVF’s brand and all Brittany needs is another DVF fashion guru to do it with. Season 2 of House of DVF comes back on screen to find her a second brand ambassador. “Call me crazy but we’re doing it all over again,” Diane said laughing in the season 2 premiere. The only question is who will be the lucky girl added to the dream team this year?

Stay tuned, September 14 for season 2 premiere of House of DVF on E!
