Gearing up to run

This past weekend was not only celebratory for Columbus day, but also for the successful completion of the Chicago Marathon by some of our own York teachers.

Adam Gearing, a social studies teacher, ran the marathon for his first time this past Sunday; although, his journey did not start at the beginning of the race.

“When I began this journey over 30 weeks ago, I had two objectives: one: to train and prepare to finish the race, and two: to raise $2,000 as part of the DetermiNation Marathon Team for the American Cancer Society,” Gearing said.

The purpose of his objectives: remembrance of others close to him.

“I wanted to accomplish these goals in memory of my Mom and Dad, and my friend Elias Spireas, and in solidarity with friends and colleagues who are battling cancer,” Gearing said.

On the day of the race, Gearing successfully completed both goals by finishing the race in 5:36:50, and by exceeding his fundraising goal by raising an astounding $2,597.27 to donate to the American Cancer Society.

Congratulations to Mr. Gearing for accomplishing his goals. For more on the Chicago Marathon, look out for the York-hi October issue coming next week.
