Musical beginnings

York High School students have always had a knack for music, and this year is the start of something truly amazing. Musically inclined York students are collaborating to create a music album. That’s right. York High School will have its own album!

This awesome opportunity is led by Mr. Gemkow, a teacher in the music department and Amateur Musicians advisor.

“I want students to have a chance to spread their talent,” Mr. Gemkow said.

The students will get their music out through a private producer contacted by Gemkow. For only $50 a session, that price is a steal.

In addition, students gain experience for recording songs in the future, as well as enough time to record and produce a full song. Beforehand, the band or solo artist must be ready to go and not waste any time.  Usually sessions are recorded, if in a band, one at a time and then the audio will be fitted correctly into the song.

However, some students are facing the challenge of creating original work. This may not sound hard, but it takes time and a lot of effort. Still, those dedicated Dukes will find it worth the effort. They will have an original piece of music of their own to show for it.

Some students have groups and are ready to take on the challenge.

“We have been a band for three years now. We are a cover band but have an original work in the making,” said Junior Alex Stezowski of the band Cherry Fifty.

Gemkow plans to keep this going every year so that more and more students can have the chance to get the music out into the world and into the ears of music aficionados.  So come join the project: this is open to anyone who wants to participate.

For the release of the album, Mr. Gemkow is going for late March to early April but will be for sure released by the end of the school year.
