Under the Monocle: Alexis Bojesen

Most kids growing up dream of becoming a firefighter, a veterinarian, a rock star, or even the president of the United States, but for York senior Alexis Bojesen, she had a different dream in mind: a hair stylist. Fast forward ten years later, most of those childhood dreams dissolve, but for Bojesen, her dream is just getting started.

When playing with dolls at a young age, Bojesen wasn’t as interested in playing pretend or dressing the them up, but instead, styling their hair.  She knew that she wanted to pursue doing hair as a career.

“I’ve always liked to make people feel good about themselves, and doing hair was something that I loved and accomplished that,” said Bojesen.

During her sophomore year, she heard about the cosmetology program at TCD through one of her teachers and showed interest.  She talked to her counselor to get more information on it and ended up being put in the program that same year. She is now on her second year in the program.

At the cosmetology program, a typical day for Bojesen and other second year students is learn and practice hair on each other or mannequins: coloring, cutting, and styling. At the end of the program, Bojesen will receive her Cosmetology License which she plans on making good use of.

“I will use my license to at first start working in a local salon to get my clientele built up,” said Bojesen. “Then one day, I hope to open and run my own salon and/or be a personal stylist for celebrities.”

Right now, Bojesen is interning at a salon to reach her cosmetology required hours, which has so far been a good experience says Bojesen.

“From interning at a smaller one-chair salon and a larger upscale salon, watching all of the stylists and learning their ways of doing hair and how to interact with clients has helped me gain knowledge on how to be successful in this business,” said Bojesen.

Next year, Bojesen will attend the University of Iowa to pursue a major in business.

“Getting a business degree will better prepare me in being aware and making smart choices for the business side of owning a salon,” said Bojesen.
