Has pumpkin spice gone too far?

Fall is back again in Elmhurst, which means the leaves will turn a warm shade of golden yellow. Comfy sweaters and boots are also back in style and people are beginning to start their days with the signature Pumpkin Spice Latte from Starbucks.

Pumpkin Spice, for those who don’t know, is a spice made up of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves, and allspice in its most basic form.

The internet has many different variations of pumpkin spice that go way beyond the coffee pot. Some great, others you’d think came out of a latte induced nightmare. Here are just a few:

Pumpkin Spice Oreos

Yep, our favorite cookie has been infiltrated by the pumpkin spice craze.

“I’ve never had them, but I think it would taste good because I like pumpkin,” said junior Katie Cappeck.

Most seem to agree that pumpkin spice Oreos are a good idea.

Sophomore Willem Ball even said, “I’m going to try that myself.”

However, Some don’t agree with the cookie change.

“I never tried pumpkin spice, but I don’t think it would be that good in Oreos,” said junior Billy Tait.

Pumpkin Spice Soap

Now you can smell like pumpkin spice all year round with the new pumpkin spice scented soap from Farmers Market. Made with organic avocado, shea butter, and of course, pumpkin spice.

“It’s an amazing idea because I love the smell of pumpkins,” said senior Riley Barnitz.

“I think it’s a good idea because pumpkin spice smells good,” said another York student.

Pumpkin Spice Air Freshener

Your home can now smell like a fresh baked pumpkin pie or spice latte with Glade’s new

limited edition pumpkin spice air freshener. Students have mixed feelings about this pumpkin spice.

“It depends on season,” said freshman Sam Harrington. “When it’s fall, the smell is welcoming, but when it’s spring it won’t smell as good.”

Pumpkin Spice Pasta Sauce and Lasagna

Italian lovers are going to go crazy over pumpkin pasta sauce paired with pumpkin spice lasagna noodles! Unfortunately, York students don’t think the pumpkin spice would taste good when pasta is involved. Words like “disgusting”, “gross” and, “ that’s crazy” are just a few of the responses students had for the unusual dish.

“That’s overboard,” said freshman Sam Harrington.

However others think that, “It wouldn’t be as bad as other pumpkin flavored items,” said senior Ian Purkes.

Pumpkin Spice Hummus

Getting bored of normal flavors? Try this new mixture of chickpeas, olive oil, garlic, and

pumpkin in Cedars Pumpkin Spice hummus dip. “Ewww” was the common reaction among York students.

“I don’t think it would taste that good mixed with hummus,” said a York student.

However, other students are actually intrigued by the  unusual dip.

“I’d be willing to try it, but I would be making fun of it the entire time,” commented Ian Purkes.

Senior Michael McHugh seems to agree, “I’d try the hummus”.

Overall, Pumpkin Spice seems to be promising, but we need to be wiser with the items we put it in. Baked goods, coffee, and lotions are very good outlets for the spice. However, something like hummus or toothpaste is not. So it just comes down to common sense. And it’s as simple as that. In the words of junior Hannah Ryan, “Just because it’s October, it doesn’t mean everything has to be pumpkin spice.”
