“The cube” is a student-favorite in Mr. Johnson’s Algebra Ab class this summer.

There are various reasons why students in Algebra AB are taking this class. Some students trying to bump up to a higher math class, some students to get a credit, some because they can learn faster, and some because they were forced to.

Having only eight kids and substantial amount of daily work, the class would seem like a total drag instead of the class being actually fun, joyful, and full of hospitality. Although the students desks are arranged to ensure there’s at least one space between each student, the students still enjoy one another’s company. Many students in the class crack jokes.

Even teacher Matt Johnson, who tries to make class fun while enjoying students learn, enjoys a good laugh during class.

“What’s Youtube?… You can upload videos?…I  was just kidding I know what Youtube is,” Johnson joked, during one of the breaks.

Mr. Johnson has been teaching for 3 years, and will be in his fourth year this fall. He will continue to teach two sections of Algebra AB during the upcoming school year.

This class isn’t just fun and laughs; the class does a lot of work.

Students take their fair share of tests and quizzes– over 20 tests and quizzes combined throughout the session. In addition to lectures and modelling from Mr. Johnson, students practice with worksheets and packets mostly every day. Then they “relax” with “the cube.”

When a students are finished with their work, they can go on their phone or “cube”.  These students are very into solving some of the 10+ Rubix Cubes around the room.

Naturally, the Algebra AB summer school class is not exactly the same experience as the same class during the regular school. They condense the material it into only six weeks.

“It’s faster paced than normal math in regular school year,” said Joe Losurdo.

Algebra AB does a lot of work throughout the day, but they still have fun.

“We do several worksheets on whatever topic we’re doing,” Kelly Walker, incoming freshman said. “We also take tests ,quizzes, and cube (rubix cube).”

According to students, some tests are more difficult than others.

“The easiest test was probably  the first one, and the hardest test was the final,” said incoming freshman, Robert Mendoza.

Still, by the end of the session, most students have learned the basics of Algebra.

“I’ve learned a lot. This class is not what I thought it would be; I thought it would be easier,” said freshman Beau Brady. “I’ve learned something everyday in Algebra so far.”

Brady will not be attending York in the fall but still wanted to prepare for high school math.

”I took this class to have practice for next year,” said Brady, who will be attending Lake Forest Academy.

Others, like Joe Losurdo took the class to move up a level in math this fall.

“I’m taking this class to be in Frosh Geometry,”  Joe Losurdo said. “It’s faster paced than normal math in regular school year.”

Despite the fast pace and difficult material, most students have good memories of this summer’s class.

Kelly Walker, freshman, said the most fun day was the “last day of the first semester.”

“We did the lesson, someone brought in pizza, and we just hung out,” Walker said.
